What type of things are solid? What makes a solid? Below is a list of things. Tell which ones you think are solids. Explain your thinking. What definition, rule, or reasoning did you use to decide whether something is a solid?
If someone has already left a comment please read and either agree or disagree. Provide an explanation for your answer. Disagreeing respectful is perfectly acceptable!
Is it a solid?
Rock rubber band milk
feather cloth baby powder
sugar foam rubber ball Styrofoam
air flour dust
cooking oil sponge iron nail
ice wood soil
melting wax salt cotton ball
Prompts are based on the book "Uncovering Student ideas in Science"
Solid's are- Rock, Foam Rubber Ball, Sponge, Wood, Baby, Styofoam, Iron Nail, Cotton Ball
ReplyDeleteThe reason is I think that these are solids are because you can't see through the object's. That is why these are solds.
i domt think a powder is a solid niether a sugar does anyone else think so
ReplyDeleteMake sure you explain your "rule".
ReplyDeleteJackson-I think that your wrong because glass is see through and it is still a solid
ReplyDeleteWell, I think that that the rock, the wood, and the fether are solids, but what do you think about the melting wax? I mean It is melting right, but it say it is melting so half could still be there it never said if it melted all the way.
ReplyDeleteRock, feathers, rubber bands, cloth, foam rubber ball, sponge, wood, styrofoam, iron nails, cotton balls. I am sure that these are all solid. Because solids are thing that you can hold in your hand with it not falling out eaisly. thing like sugar. baby powder, soil and dust I am pretty sure that those are solids but I don't know. Because they are not like liquids. A exmple of a liquid is milk and those things are not like milk. I guess that those are solids because each litte thing of sugar and those things are made up of little tiny solids? Agree with me anybody?
ReplyDeleteI think that rocks, wood, and ice are a solid because you can hold it. I also think that baby power, and milk is not soild beacause you can't hold it.
ReplyDeleteWe'll I'm sorry I make a mistake
ReplyDeleteObviosly a rock is a solid, And I know wood and ice are solid. You are right about the others too Ryan.
ReplyDeleteGeorgia I agree with you I also think a glass is a solid to. I think it is a solid because it is hard and does not form into a different when it is put into a jar.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry Rylan I called you Ryan.
ReplyDeleteWait baby powder is a solid because it is not a liquid or gas.
ReplyDeleteI think that milk is not a solid because it can pour into a substance and has a and takes the shape of that substance. a solid is like a rock that stays the same shape all the time. I aggree
ReplyDeletewith Georga .L because milk is a liquid no a solid!
Glass is a solid too. If you don't think so prove to yourself that glass is a liquid or gas. In a form glass is a liquid but not when we usually see it. Mary Ann you are correct.
ReplyDeleteMary Ann I agree with you because glass, rock, or anything that's solid is hard so it does'nt really make a diffrence if you just put it into a jar because nothing is so scientific or intresting of a ordanary jar! Its very boring and does ABSOLUTLY nothing! So yeah I agree with you Mary Ann.
ReplyDeleteWould dust be a gas or a solid? May somone comment.
ReplyDeleteI think that rocks, feathers, wood, ice, nalis, and a ball, are solids because there moliculse are pressed to gether tightly, and can not move,so there for it is solid.
ReplyDeleteHay Jackson I agree. I also think an iron nail and a peice of wood is a soild to. I think a cottion ball is consitterd a soild to because you can hold it un like milk.
ReplyDeletethey are all solids exept the melting wax, milk and air
ReplyDeletesolids are something you cn hold
ReplyDeleteglass started as a liquid and was molded into a sloid
ReplyDeleteI think it is a solid because gas is like steam and it is more likely for it to be a solid.
ReplyDeleteHey Daniel A. I think you forgot to put cooking oil.
ReplyDeleteWhat about the iron nail. It was made out of a hot liquid.
ReplyDeleteI agree but what is it when you see it?
ReplyDeleteI think that most of them are solids except for milk and melting wax which I think are liquids and air which is a gass. Any comments?
ReplyDeleteyes
ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about the melting wax?
ReplyDeleteI love seeing our students use capitalization rules when they write about science!
ReplyDeleteI think an iron nail is a solid. She is not talking about before they make it, she is talking about a regular iron nail.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone agree?
Milk is not a solid it is a liquid but a rock,wood,foam rubber ball,ice,feather,iron nail,rubber band,cloth,and cotton ball's.
ReplyDeleteI dont think powder, sugar, or flour is a solid I kind of think its a gas.
ReplyDeleteWell, why do you think that Seth?
ReplyDeleteI think Melting Wax is a liquid because because its runny
ReplyDeleteMost of these are solids except air, cooking oil, melting wax, flour, baby powder, sugar, salt, and dust
ReplyDeleteI think Asaad because it doesnt look like a solid.
ReplyDeleteI think its a solid beause salt, sugar and powder have cristals that are tiny enough that you cann't see them. But since crystels are considered as solids thay count.
ReplyDeleteI think baby powder, sugar, salt, and dust are solid.
ReplyDeleteWell it doesnt just fit right that it is a solid
ReplyDeleteI think melting wax, air, cooking oil, milk is not a solid but evrything else is.
ReplyDeleteI agree with georgia
ReplyDeleteOK, I'm thinking about the comment someone said about a liquid being something that can be poured into another object and take that object's shape. Wouldn't salt or sugar take the shape of an object that it is poured into? But I don't think of salt and sugar as a liquid. Does our definition of a liquid need to be refined? Ms. Kleb
ReplyDeleteI wonder if some items can take different forms of matter? If you melt sugar, it becomes a liquid. When it cools, it becomes a solid. Makes me think that Georgia is on the right track. I love all the thinking and sharing going on. This is a worthwhile assignment.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work- Mrs. Harn
I think Rocks
ReplyDeleterubber bands feathers cloth baby powder
sugar foam rubber ball Styrofoam
flour dust
sponge iron nail
ice wood soil
melting wax salt cotton ball
are all solids
Hey Asaad dust would be a solid.
ReplyDeleteWell, yes the bigger the object is it takes up more space right? I am pretty sure that is right. Because a cup of sugar is less than 1 block of wood.
ReplyDeleteSam I think you are right. Josh I agree with you to.
ReplyDeleteI agree Samuel.
ReplyDeleteDo you think there is a way to melt salt? What other things can you come up with that you can have melt that is already a solid?
ReplyDeletethanks Wareen
ReplyDeleteI think ice, cooking oil, melting wax, and milk are all liquid, but i think ice can be a solid and liquid because it melts in heat also with the melting wax because it is hard and the wax melts when lighted.
ReplyDeleteYOU can melt styrafoam and salt to.
ReplyDeleteI want to answer some questions. Does anyone have any?
ReplyDeleteNice. you spelled my name wrong Wareen I mean come on. haha
ReplyDeleteWax can be counted as both.
ReplyDeletesorry and I dont
ReplyDeleteGo to the top and vote on the whenyou do your Homework.
ReplyDeletesolid is matter paked tightly togeth
ReplyDeleteYa, I think you are right. Aron
ReplyDeleteKaitlyn- Sorry if I said it was a solid I was trying to say a example of a liquid
ReplyDeleteAnd Claire I agree with you about the melting wax
ReplyDeleteyes Emma I agree with you. I think a iron nail and a pice of wood is a soild to. I also think a rock is a solid because it is hard.
ReplyDeleteHey. My post didn't show up?
ReplyDeleteI think the only things that aren't solids are milk, air, melting wax and cooking oil. Some things on the list can be solid or change to a liquid when exposed to heat like ice and sugar. I hope it works this time!!!!
I think milk and cooking oil are the only substances that are not solids because they can take any form and be poured. Solids have a set form.Wax is on the border of a solid and liquid because it can hold its shape, but it is soft without having air inside of it.
ReplyDeleteThe soild's are rock,feather,ice,sugar,clost,salt,wood,sponge,foam rubber ball,rubberband, dust,baby powder,iron nail,soil,cotton ball and styrofoam.
ReplyDeleteHey Warren you cant melt salt but you can disalvie it
ReplyDeleteHey Niki what about melted wax
ReplyDeleteSugar, salt, soil, baby powder, dust, and flour are also solids.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Colter
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Nicole.
ReplyDeleteI really love the discussion! YEA!
ReplyDeleteIs it fair to say that all liquids have to be wet? Would that rule work?
What about smoke or a cloud? Are they gas?
ReplyDeletewhat about ice and cloth
ReplyDeleteIce and cloth are solids.
ReplyDeleteYes mam thay are gasses
ReplyDeleteSmoke and clouds are gasses
ReplyDeleteSmoke and clouds are gases but a could is made up of water so would you really count it as a gas?
ReplyDeleteabout 90% of the body are liquid
ReplyDeleteWell a liquid is runny so I can't think of a liquid that is not wet. Can you think of one?
ReplyDeleteI dont think there is any liquid thats not wet.
ReplyDeleteWarren- I do agreed about the a feather is a solid
ReplyDeleteThare is not a liquid that is not wet
ReplyDeleteWhy not?
ReplyDelete??? I think that the solids are the rock, feather, and the wood and (ect.) but im with Warren on this one and its about the multing wax.it goes on liquid first bit then it turns hard.... :( im confused!!!
ReplyDeleteKelsie- Don't feel overwelmed. It is okay to just get the ideas out. Don't worry about right answers right now. :)
ReplyDeleteim happy now
ReplyDeleteWell wood is definently a solid so is a feather and rock. So yeah warren is right.
ReplyDeleteI think these are all solids rock, feather, sugar, ice, rubber band, cloth, foam rubber ball, flower, sponge, wood, baby powder,Styrofoam, dust, iron nail, cotton ball. i think all of those are solids.
ReplyDeleteMrs. Charles- I do agree about that clouds and smoke are gas, but those are not solids.
ReplyDeleteJoshua Miller- I do agree about all your solids
ReplyDeleteI think everything in the list is a solid except for milk, cooking oil, and air.
ReplyDeleteBut with melting wax half can be a solid and
half can be a liquid. I think the melted wax is
a liquid becuase it will take the shape of the container it's put in and the non melted I see as a solid.
Ya I am right. Cool.
ReplyDeleteYes I agree about that, that all liquids are all wet.
ReplyDeleteHey is any one on?
ReplyDeleteWarren- Yes you are wright again!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Melanie because sugar and dust are solids. But there is so many of them and there so little that alot of them will fill not take the shape but fill up a container because its a solid.
ReplyDeleteI dont think dust is a solid Josh
ReplyDeleteYa I am on a roll!
ReplyDeleteWhy? I think it is a solid?
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteBecause it is not something you could drink you would eat it if so.
ReplyDeleteBye.
ReplyDeleteWait what do you think Jackson? Is dust a solid?
ReplyDeleteNow I have to go.
ReplyDeleteI know that baby powder is not a solid, because solids are usually hard and baby powder isn't even close to being hard.
ReplyDeleteNo. I do not agree on that. It is not a liquid because all liquids will get you wet, and it is not a gas,so it has to be a solid.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Warren.
ReplyDeleteI agree that babby power is a liqid becaus if you poured a glass of of water on it would becaus a liqid
ReplyDeletethink suger,babypowder,salt,flour and dust are
ReplyDeletesolids.Because like warren said liquids make you
wet.And gases like air you cant see.So suger, babypowder, salt, flour, and dust are solids.
I think sugar, baby powder, salt, sugar, dust, flour are solids. They are strange to be solids, but there not either liquid or gas. So I think they are solids. Milk and cooking oil are examples of liquids. Air is a gas.
ReplyDeleteI think a rubberband is a soild because it doesent take the shap of a object if you put it in
ReplyDeletei agree with jaiken
ReplyDeleteI love all this discussion and have a few follow up questions that I have posted for "Is it a solid part 2" Check there and comment as neccessary!
ReplyDeletehi is any one thare
ReplyDeleteHey guys -- here is something I just found on the web. Looks like a cloud is a liquid, not a gas.
ReplyDelete"Clouds, snow, and rain are all made of up of some form of water. A cloud is comprised of tiny water droplets and/or ice crystals, a snowflake is an aggregate of many ice crystals, and rain is just liquid water."
Dylan post this on the is it a solid part 2.
ReplyDeleteWe started the discussion there. :)
And what does aggregate mean?
Yeah? What does aggregate mean?!? I'm confused!!!!! Im not really good at English so please teach me what the meaning of aggregate mean!!
ReplyDeleteI am confused.
ReplyDeletehello is any body there
ReplyDeleteIdont know what that means
ReplyDeletehello
ReplyDeleteis any body thare
ReplyDeleteWow lots of comments on this but I am excited.
